Another letter from an Away Fan

Friday 22nd March 2013 at 2:41PM

My 6 year old son (named) had asked throughout the season to come to your ground, so on Saturday we visited to support our team Portsmouth. We were sat in the away end when we were approached by one of your match day staff. He asked if we would like to have a photograph taken on the away bench and watch the team warm up. My son said yes immediately and your fantastic club turned a lovely day into a special day that he will remember for the rest of his life. I wanted to say thank you for your wonderful gesture and if our club is ever fortunate enough to play in the same league as yours I will visit every time to put money in to your club.

Just a short letter, but one year on after the start of the work Doncaster Rovers has done on Fan Engagement, a perfect illustration of 'a different way of doing things'.

It's not about sexy smart phone applications, innovative partnership activation or pricing pilots. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with these developments, of course, but this gesture (cost-free, easy to do, within your control) not only creates family memories that endure throughout a lifetime, but defines, as closely as possible, the term Fan Engagement.

Football has so much magic in it. And for a sport that's built on emotional loyalty, we shouldn't be shy of sharing it.
